What's all this about?
Porsche has revealed its latest special-edition 911, designed to pay homage to the cars and the design of the 1970s. Dubbed the 911 Spirit 70, it comes with a host of retro design changes, but it’s based on the latest-generation 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet, complete with its T-Hybrid powertrain.
It does look very retro...
Just a bit. That new Olive Green Neo colour scheme is bold, to say the least, but it definitely evokes memories of the 1970s and 1980s. And it’s joined by lashes of a colour called Bronzite, which makes an appearance on the lower sections at the front and rear, and on the Fuchs-style alloy wheels. But the soft-top hood and the windscreen surround are both black, as are the three longitudinal racing stripes on the bonnet and the hood. The ‘lollipop’ number roundel on the flank is black, too, and like the other Heritage Design 911s, including the Sport Classic, the Spirit 70 gets gold lettering at the rear.
That gold lettering appears inside, too, although it’s hardly the most eye-catching thing about the Spirit 70’s interior. Instead, the seats are much more obvious, with their black leather and ‘Pasha’ centres, which have a kind of yellow-green chequered flag look.
Any other changes?
Not many, but there are some subtle tweaks, such as the changes to the numbers in the digital instrument display, which have a retro green-and-white design, and the same effect on the Sport Chrono clock in the dashboard. There’s Olive Green Neo stitching in the black leather, too.
And under the bonnet?
That’s much the same as in any other 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet, with the same 3.6-litre flat-six engine, small battery and electric motor hidden in the gearbox. The result is an ample 541hp, which makes even the drop-top 911 pretty quick in a straight line. And as standard, the Spirit 70 gets the GTS’s sports suspension and the no-cost option of lowered Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management with rear-wheel steering.
How much does all this cost?
As you can imagine, it isn’t cheap. The Spirit 70 comes in at £187,700, making it about £40,000 more expensive than a basic 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet. Still, with just 1,500 examples on offer, the Spirit 70 is considerably more exclusive.
